Summer school 2026
The Centre for Teacher Education (ZLB) at the University of Vienna and the Institute for Educational Sciences at the University of Basel (IBW), which is jointly financed and managed by the University of Basel and the University of Teacher Education FHNW, would like to support young researchers in their work and in the selection and application of didactic and educational research methods with a joint summer school.
The Summer School is aimed at all early career researchers in the field of teaching and learning (research-oriented Bachelor's theses, Master's theses, dissertations and habilitations). An active contribution to the Summer School (presentation or poster) and participation during the entire period are expected. In-depth methodological knowledge is not a prerequisite, but the aim of the event.
History of the Summer School
The first Summer School of its kind in Austria took place from 8 to 11 July 2009 in Spital am Pyhrn under the name "Methodological Foundations of Subject Didactic Research". It was initiated and organised by Anja Lembens from the Austrian Centre of Excellence in Chemistry Education (AECC Chemie aeccc.univie.ac.at/). This first summer school was aimed at all young researchers in the didactics of biology, chemistry and physics (diploma thesis, dissertation) in Austria. From then on, Summer Schools were regularly organised and held by the Austrian Competence Centres for Didactics of Biology, Chemistry and Physics (AECCs), which until 2013 were aimed exclusively at people from science didactics.
After the founding of the Centre for Teacher Education at the University of Vienna, the target group was expanded. Since 2014, the Summer School has been aimed at all young academics (Master's, dissertation, habilitation) who are researching aspects of teaching and learning from a didactic and/or educational science perspective. The organisation remains in the hands of the AECCs. Around 25 young academics from Austria, Switzerland and Germany take part each year.
Since 2021, the Summer School has been organised in cooperation with the Institute of Educational Sciences at the University of Basel.
